how do i get this dog to stop chewing up stuff?
my girlfriend has a dog and he will not stop chewing stuff up when we are at work. It seems fairly random, so we’re not sure why he does it. She thinks it is when we don’t let him sleep with us or something of that nature. i think he is just a horrible dog. we have tried alot, bought him toys to play with or chew on. he does play with them, but still chews stuff up when we are not home. any ideas? please help me. I am on my last straw!!!
Some dogs cannot cope with being left alone all day, They become bored and miserable, as a consequence they chew.
If your girlfriend loves her dog, she should take if for a LONG before she goes to work and try to get home at lunchtime. In addition to this she should get either a friend or pay a dog walker to take it out in her absence AND take it for a long walk when she comes home.
Lets face it, if you could not read, watch T.V. or use your computer, you would be bored and lonely. The fact that her dog chews is not his fault, it is her fault.

Crate.

The dog is bored, under-exercised, and not trained. Crate the dog when you’re not there to watch him,, take him out for good exercise more often, and enroll him in obedience.
A tired dog is a good dog. A trained dog is the best dog.
He’s not a horrible dog, since he can’t tell you that his needs aren’t being met – he’s showing you. Take the hint.
Never elevate the dog to your status by allowing it to sleep in your bed.

Crate..
and teach the "LEAVE IT" command..so you stop her when caught in the act, then give her something she is allowed to chew on like a kong w/peanut butter.

lol thats funny my sisters dog would bite shoes and stuff too so we had to tell him no! and give him things that he can chew and when u see him biting stuff you say no!!! and give him what is okay to be chewed keep doing that all the time until he finally understands that hes not suppose to chew certain things.

Buy Bitter Apple, and spray the stuff he chews that you don’t want him to chew.
Sounds like he is bored and needs more excercise too. I like Kathleen and Ferrets answers.
If he’s a puppy he could be teething. Ice cubes help with that.
Failing that, he’s got to stay in his crate when you’re gone.
You think he is a horrible dog for this? That’s a little worrisome.

spank him or leave him outside

First, don’t leave things laying around so he can chew them. Confine him to a doggie proofed area of the home when you are not there. You can even use a baby gate or two to keep him confined.
It’s more likely that he’s bored or angry/resenting that he is home alone. Dogs do not think "they didn’t let me sleep on the bed so today I’m gonna chew this up". And it could be a pent up energy problem if he’s not getting enough exercise.
And of course, educating yourself on canine behavior would be an excellent idea. You can’t be the leader when you don’t know how to lead. Watch programs on dog training such as Dog Whisperer and It’s Me Or The Dog. Both have excellent results and do come from slightly different angles.
And I hate to be the one who breaks this news to you but there are seldom horrible dogs. There are untrained dogs owned by uneducated, untrained people. Dogs are pack animals and are looking to their human owners to provide structure, rules, boundaries and love and affection. Gee, sounds an awful lot like children too!

Crate him while you’re gone. That guarantees nothing will be destroyed. Make sure he’s getting plenty of exercise.

Crates make particularly good tools for housetraining and help prevent boredom and separation anxiety.
